Oxford's Ashmolean museum improving its world-class Egyptian galleries
Filed under: Arts and Culture, History, Learning, Africa, Europe, Egypt, United Kingdom
The famous Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology in Oxford, England, reopened in 2009 after a £61 million ($101 million) makeover. The redesigned space is more open and airy, with more natural light and windows between exhibitions. Floorspace was doubled in size and the exhibits were made more informative and user firendly. A museum worker explained to me that part of the plan was to make it so you can always see your way out. This is to combat museum fatique. Personally I'm a museum junkie and I don't get museum fatigue, but it sounds like a good idea.
Despite three years of work and the high price tag, the Ashmolean's famous Egyptian galleries got left behind. There was no money to redo them at the time but after collecting another £5 million ($8.3), the galleries are now shut and going through a major overhaul. The four old Egyptian galleries were crowded and poorly lit, and will now be redesigned along the lines of the rest of the musuem. They'll also expand into a fifth gallery to give the collection more room.
The Ashmolean Museum has been collecting Egyptian artifacts since 1683, when it was founded as the oldest public museum in the world. Its displays tell the story of one of the world's greatest civilizations from its prehistoric beginnings until it became part of the Greek and Roman empires. Its collection of predynatic artifacts is the best outside of Egypt and show how Egypt developed into a superpower.
The Egyptian galleries will reopen in November 2011 and Gadling plans to be there to cover it.

Glen Canyon National Recreation Area
on December 21. A bit of advice from theancient world resonates: Carpe diem-seize
the day. Seize a day that is imperceptibly shorter than the one that preceded it,
and seize the next, which will be even briefer. Have an adventure. Drink life to the
lees. Embark, and explore. And make your first stop Glen Canyon National Recreation

The Flip is dead, but pocket camcorders live on
Technology has a natural life cycle. Products are introduced, gain acceptance, mature, start to lose appeal as something better (or at least newer) comes along, then fade from view entirely (except for the occasional garage-sale sighting). That's what was so startling about the news that Cisco had decided to kill off the Flip camcorder. Sure, the Flip no longer had that new tech luster. And, sure, the proliferation of smartphone devices (with their ability to capture video footage, even in HD) has started to nip away at the Flip's reason for being. Still, as a category, there's lots of life left in pocket camcorders, most experts say.

It's starting to look more like fall.Nara Discovers Her Feet
Kids are funny. They really don't see the world the same way we do. Obviously they don't have the cultural references or language yet, but they haven't really figured out everything about their bodies. One day Nara found her feet.We usually dressed her in footed sleepers so naked feet were only available at changing time. That mean that every time we changed her, her feet went in her mouth. Those little hands aren't that coordinated either so there are a number of misses, but she is obviously happy when it all comes together.
Thanksgiving On the Island
When you have a baby, it's important that you don't let the details of life chain you to your house and habit. Going to the Island (when it was just Helen and I) used to be an easy affair - we both pack some clothes and basically go. When you mix in a Baby, it becomes a car filling affair. Even with the effort, it's important to get out and visit people.
We had brunch at the Kingfisher - the local spa/resort. It's an amazing spread so I'm always amazed that people agree to have their photos taken afterwards.
UBC Apple Festival
One year, many years ago, David and I were biking around UBC and we stumbled onto the apple festival. At that point it was small, free and a cool find. Given that fall can be short or reasons to get outside, the Apple Festival turned into a bit of a tradition for me. This year we added Nara!More...

Observe the 25th anniversary of Chernobyl searching for radioactive beasts with VBS
Filed under: History, Asia, Europe, Ukraine, Video, Ecotourism, News, Travel Health
25 years ago today, a catastrophic nuclear disaster took place at the Chernobyl power plant in the city of Pripyat. Haunted by the specter of radiation, the one time city transformed into a spread of creepy abandoned buildings and one of the most poisonous places on the planet - the Red Forest. With humans gone, the town has been taken back by wildlife. Today, wolves wander abandoned schools with kitschy Soviet propaganda peeling from the wall and bears lumber through the overgrown amusement park that opened the day after the disaster, April 27, 1986.
In this video by the crew at Vice, Shane Smith goes on a tour of Pripyat to hunt for mutant beasts and explore derelict buildings. The abandoned radioactive town is an eerie ghost-scape, but many travelers have been making the 100km journey from Kiev to visit this strange example of an abandoned modern town. The video is an interesting and somewhat humorous look inside the Chernobyl exclusion zone.
