10 Tips for Enjoying Your Backyard This Summer

BioGuard, one of the nation's premier suppliers of pool and spa products, wants to help make this the best summer ever with the following 10 tips, time-savers, water-care ideas, and maintenance and safety suggestions for backyard living.

  1. Safety first. Follow a few commonsense rules in the backyard and around the pool: keep each child within arm's length at all times; designate an adult as water watcher; ensure that the pool's fence is always locked, and install both gate and pool alarms to alert you to unsupervised pool use.

  2. Use plants to dress up the landscape. A bit of backyard greenery can be both pretty and functional. Use shrubs for form, foliage-heavy plants for color, and sturdy perennials for reliability. Plenty of pretty perennials, such as coneflowers and black-eyed Susans, require little tending and offer cheery blooms throughout the growing season.

  3. Add years to backyard furnishings. If mildew spots appear on outside chairs and tables, wash the fabric according to manufacturer directions and dry in the sun. Then mix together equal parts lemon juice and salt; spread on the stain. Dry in the sun again and rinse thoroughly.

  4. Organize backyard toys and tools. Two simple storage rules for keeping backyard clutter to a minimum: air out wet things by storing them in big mesh bags or open-weave crates; toss all the little bits ? sunscreen, dive toys ? into a clear plastic shoe organizer hung on the fence where everyone can easily find them.

  5. Stay healthy with a water workout. According to the Centers for Disease Control, just 21 minutes a day of exercising in a pool can decrease your risk of chronic disease. If swimming laps doesn't excite you, there are other great ways to get moving. Try kickboxing using water as the resistance and enjoy the benefits of strength, endurance and balance. Depending on intensity, a typical water exercise session of 40 to 50 minutes can burn up to 600 calories.

  6. Maintain a perfect pool. A pool filled with cloudy water equals no fun. Fortunately there's a pool-care strategy ? Circulation, Filtration, Cleaning, Testing and Chemistry ? that equals a stellar pool season. Maintaining a pool, its equipment and beautiful water requires proper water treatment. A BioGuard dealer can provide computerized water testing and recommend the best regular care schedule for your pool.

  7. Convert an ordinary salt pool into a backyard oasis. Instead of using typical bulk salt, try a product such as Mineral Springs from BioGuard. It contains a special blend of minerals, pool equipment protectors, water enhancers and pH adjusters that all work to make silky, relaxing water.

  8. Soak in a sensational spa. A backyard spa can offer the same soothing effects as a professional spa with a few easy, affordable ideas. Place flameless LED candles around the edge of the spa. Take tunes into the spa with a floating speaker that connects wirelessly to an MP3 player. Add a soothing scent to the water with single-use aromatherapy packs.

  9. Make a smaller footprint on the Earth. In order to be more environmentally friendly, make sure to always keep pool chemicals properly balanced. Overworked filters and motors waste energy and hike utility bills.

  10. Help pets swim safely. It may seem like fun to let the dog paddle around, but before you let a pooch jump in, make sure he can get out without damaging the pool or hurting himself. Also check with the vet - swimming in a pool should be appropriate for the breed. Finally, make additional time to monitor the pool's water. A typical dog can be the equivalent of about 50 swimmers in the pool, meaning extra vigilance is needed to maintain the chemical balance.

Printer guzzling ink? It's not just your imagination

If you feel like you're constantly replacing the ink in your printer, you're not the only one. Hewlett-Packard recently settled a class-action lawsuit accusing it of selling ink-drinking printers for the past decade.

The settlement actually covers three separate lawsuits. One claimed that some HP printers use color ink to print black-and-white pages, without telling users or allowing them to change the setting. Another alleged that the printers gave false "low on ink" readings (so users would replace cartridges sooner), and another claimed that some HP ink cartridges simply quit working on secret expiration dates.

Outdoor Tips: Pack More Efficiently For Camping Trips

To be honest, packing is one of the more loathsome chores to complete when going on a camping trip. Open Question: Where can I camp away from it all?

Hi, I live in Omaha Nebraska. A few old friends and I were looking forward to going camping. We want a real camping experience, not one of those canvas suburbia campgrounds, but one where we can be nearly alone (I don't mind a few friendly neighbors). Basically, I am looking for a site with no real established campgrounds. My friends have experienced this out of state (very far out of state) and we wanted to do it again. I, however am fairly new to camping and have somehow been put in charge of finding a campsite. There are a few good areas in Iowa that are Nature Refuges, but I can't find whether or not it would be illegal to camp there. So if you have any ideas about the general laws, good places to camp in my area (you know, without the overcrowded sites), or even just how to find out where to camp like this, all answers are appreciated.
I would be willing to travel 45-60 min from Omaha (at the most).

Fishing in the French Polynesian waters

Fakarava Atoll, the Tuamotus, French Polynesia - Maru's 16-foot, plywood fishing boat, steered by one metal rod coming straight out of the floorboards in his left hand and accelerated by another rod held tightly in his right hand, hugs the eastern edge of Passe Garuae. One of only two passes accessing the atoll's thirty-six-by-twenty-one mile lagoon, twice day big water rushes either in or out and navigation requires years of experience.

As we try to edge our way out onto the South Pacific for a day of fishing, currents at the heart of the pass are running out at about seven knots, creating what appear to be standing riptides. If we were anywhere near the center, we'd most likely be cart wheeled by the fast-moving water and big waves.

Maru, a 46-year-old native of Fakarava - the Tuamotus' second-largest atoll - has driven boats through here thousands of time, so far without incident. I'm hoping his luck stays.

Despite a population of about 700 on this remote atoll 150 miles north and east of Tahiti, there are surprisingly few people making a living off fishing. It's not because there aren't fish, but because the big industry here - black pearls-has become more lucrative and in some respects easier. Though the boom in the growing of black pearls has weakened the industry a bit in recent years by flooding the market - every Polynesian with access to the ocean wants in on the business - it doesn't require risking life and limb on the open ocean everyday.

Maru tells me he prefers this life than the more intensive routine of seeding oysters and monitoring them for more than a year and a half, hoping they'll produce pearls. His days are routine, leaving from the docks of Fakarava's one town around six and returning by two or three in the afternoon. His catch provides the bulk of the fresh fish for the atoll's residents. This day he'll take a dozen big mahi-mahi, spearing them from his boat while simultaneously steering and accelerating. He surveys for signs of a small school - watching for the big fish to break the surface - and then chases them down, tiring them. It requires a skill-set few Westerners can imagine: Steering, accelerating, scouting and spearing, all with only two hands.

Photo of the day - Walk this way in Malaysia

Photo of the day
Today's Photo of the Day is from Malacca, Malaysia, a nice slice-of-life from Flickr user Don Wright of a local family out on a walk. We're intrigued right now with Malacca after following the tweets and dispatches of the bloggers at Eating Asia, who are currently eating their way through Malacca. Malaysia is becoming increasingly well-known as a culinary hotspot and with colorful lakma, homemade fruit tarts, and lots of fresh seafood to eat still at bargain prices, it's sure to become more popular with foodie travelers. Perhaps the little girl above is pointing the way to the next hot restaurant.

Taken any trips to up-and-coming destinations? Share them with us by adding them to the Gadling Flickr pool and we may choose it for a future Photo of the Day.

Study shows toddlers escape car seat restraints

While parents play chauffeur, their little ones might be playing Houdini in the back seat, undoing their safety belts much to their delight but to their parents' horror. According to a recent pilot study by Yale University School of Medicine, most kids start to unbuckle themselves at age three. And many children play escape artist while the vehicle is in motion, putting them at a 3.5 fold increased risk of serious injury.
